Hetian Jade: Origins and Unique Qualities
Hetian jade is a form of nephrite formed under unique geological and climatic conditions that give it distinct colors, textures, and hardness. Its colors are often white or shades of green, with occasional warm yellow tones. The surface is smooth and delicate, and under light it appears crystal-clear with soft translucence. Within the stone, small natural “cotton-like” inclusions are often visible. A hallmark of true jade is its cool temperature to the touch, which remains constant year-round. Despite its silky look, Hetian jade is remarkably hard; even sharp blades leave no scratches. Its primary components are tremolite and actinolite, both monoclinic minerals with fibrous and microcrystalline structures, creating toughness and durability.
The Craft of Gold Inlay
“金鑲玉” literally means “gold inlaid with jade.” It refers to a traditional Chinese craft of embedding or overlaying jade with precious gold. The art is believed to have entered the Qing imperial court through one of Emperor Qianlong’s concubines, who brought exquisite examples. Fascinated, the emperor ordered artisans to study and reproduce the craft. With success, it became a royal hallmark. Though the tradition faded during the decline of the Qing, it has been revived with modern refinement—no longer limited to vessels but elevated into jewellery.
